The prepared packer
It really depends on where you're headed and for how long but here's a detailed breakdown of some items you might want to consider bringing along. My field of work restricts me mainly to shorter trips so usually I travel light.
It's also recommended to travel light if you're headed to Europe, the airports there have much stricter toiletry and baggage allowances. They usually limit you to a quart sized zip-lock bag for any liquids in your hand baggage (they also count all cream make-up products as liquids). Smaller European / UK based airports also sometimes have TSA hours, for example TSA at Gatwick airport in London will close at 11 pm regardless of if your flight is at mid-night. If this is news to you it was also news to me when I missed my flight to Greece :)
